In Reply To Questions about insuring the Z while it's all torn apart.... posted by Waggz on August 12, 2008 at 01:47 PM

Message I had a similar dilemma for my 240Z and Z32 and took different approaches for each – ultimately I decided that if the car was going to be off the road more than a few months and not need any testing while being worked on I would just have comprehensive on it.

The 240Z is stock, needs a fair amount of work and has the engine out. It just has comprehensive with $0 deductible which covers the fire/theft/vandalism scenarios (make certain to get something in writing from your agent confirming that parts off the car are covered).

I take the Z32 off the road for several weeks and even months at a time once or twice a year. Because of work demands I typically can’t perform anything major in a short period of time so it often sits with parts off of it. It does however get driven about once every-other week on the average and has never been off the road for more than 2 months at one time. I keep collision and comprehensive on it. It’s just not worth the hassle of flipping the switch every time I have it off the road for a few weeks.

The Z32 is covered by a Hagerty stated value policy which also covers parts not on the car (all of the pulled OEM parts, extra tires/wheels and parts waiting to be put on are covered up to $5K on my particular policy). My understanding is that a Hagerty policy can be set up with coverage for a car undergoing restoration as well – no collision, but complete coverage for all of the components. I have never had a claim with Hagerty so I do not know how good they really are, but I have heard good things (often discussed on tt.net as you likely know).

Regardless of which approach you take, I recommend investing time in getting an insurance agent that knows you personally and that you can trust. We are too passionate about our cars to have insurance agents that don’t get us. I’ve had very few claims, but mine has always been an advocate when I have them and has answered some interesting questions without screwing me on coverage, e.g., “so what exactly should I do if I have a wreck at the track”?
